In-plane interfacial phonon transport through multi-layer thin films by theoretical analyses and Monte Carlo simulations

چکیده

This work studies the in-plane phonon transport through double-layer, superlattice, and four-layer thin films by theoretical analyses Monte Carlo simulations. The spectral diffuse mismatch model adiabatic scattering are taken as interface surface boundary conditions respectively. results indicate that number of thin-film layers has little impact on heat flux distribution within each layer there is a discontinuity at interface. Indentical thermal conductivities obtained for with uniform thickness layer. means negligible impacts conductivity, which can provide first explicit explanation to observation in recent experiment. Finally, minimum conductivity found when varying ratios. extreme points also analytically obtained. law completely different from cross-plane or predicted Fourier's conduction leads monotonic relation between ratio.

Cross-plane phonon transport in thin films

We predict the cross-plane phonon thermal conductivity of Stillinger-Weber silicon thin films as thin as 17.4 nm using the lattice Boltzmann method. The thin films are modeled using bulk phonon properties obtained from harmonic and anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations. We use this approach, which considers all of the phonons in the first Brillouin-zone, to assess the suitability of common a...

Phonon-mediated electron transport through CaO thin films.

Scanning tunneling microscopy has developed into a powerful tool for the characterization of conductive surfaces, for which the overlap of tip and sample wave functions determines the image contrast. On insulating layers, as the CaO thin film grown on Mo(001) investigated here, direct overlap between initial and final states is not enabled anymore and electrons are transported via hopping throu...

Theoretical foundations of dynamical Monte Carlo simulations

Monte Carlo methods are utilized as computational tools in many areas of chemical physics. In this paper, we present the theoretical basis for a dynamical Monte Carlo method in terms of the theory of Poisson processes. We show that if: ( 1) a “dynamical hierarchy” of transition probabilities is created which also satisfy the detailed-balance criterion; (2) time increments upon successful events...

Computational Study of In-Plane Phonon Transport in Si Thin Films

We have systematically investigated the in-plane thermal transport in Si thin films using an approach based on the first-principles calculations and lattice dynamics. The effects of phonon mode depletion induced by the phonon confinement and the corresponding variation in interphonon scattering, which may be important for the thermal conductivities of ultra-thin films but are often neglected in...

Ion Transport through Monolayers and Interfacial Films

Ion transport through monolayers and through several molecules of thick films at the mercury/water interface is discussed. The permeability of the monolayer is described by a rate constant, k(c). The permeability of a thin but not monomolecular film is expressed as a function of the thickness of the film, the diffusion coefficient of the permeant in the film, and the distribution coefficient be...
